THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA

LANGUAGE

English is the national language of the United States. It should be understandable by English-speakers from most parts of the world, although some regional accents are hard even for Americans to understand.
...... Few Americans speak another language. There are pockets in the central states where small communities speak German or one of the Scandinavian languages, but they will invariably speak English also. The same is true for some people living or working along the U.S. border with eastern Canada, where French may be a second language for some. But in general, it’s an English-only country.
...... The one exception, in some parts of the country, would be Spanish. There are enough new immigrants along the southern U.S. border from California to Texas that there are communities where Spanish is the first language, and some residents may not speak any English. Also in those areas, many native English speakers know a fair amount of Spanish.
...... Thus, it is probably imperative (yet unfortunate) that you, or someone in your traveling group, speak English. Yes, there are exceptions, but you shouldn’t rely on Americans understanding any other language.
...... You can also contact locals who are willing to help with your travels. Of course, a phrase book, a smile, and lots of pantomime work wonders, anywhere in the world.
