By world standards, the U.S. has a brief history. Depending on what historian you consult, the history of America begins with humans crossing the land bridge between Russia and Alaska some 15,000 years ago; or with Columbus “discovering” America in 1492; or with the first colonists on the Mayflower in 1620. But however you look at it, we’re a new country.
...... U.S. history is interesting to many visitors, and much of the eastern U.S. has many historic sites – such as battlefields from the Revolutionary and Civil wars, and historic communities from the 18th and 19th centuries.

There are wind-blasted deserts with a unique, serene beauty; jagged mountain ranges rising above 14,000 feet/4,200 meters (up to 20,000 feet/6,000 meters in Alaska) with year-round snowfields and glaciers; some of the longest rivers and deepest gorges in the world; forests of giant redwood trees that are among the largest and oldest living things on earth; and a wealth of other spectacular vistas.
