THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA

GUIDEBOOKS

As travel becomes ever more popular, and more egalitarian, travel guidebooks have sprung up like spring wildflowers. There are probably more than a dozen series of guidebooks, each covering hundreds of world destinations.
...... At this time, we can’t recommend a single U.S.A. guidebook – it’s such a huge place, and the books are simply trying to cover too much in too little space. Even the regional guides (New England, the American Southwest, etc.) can be surprisingly superficial.
...... Our suggestion is to find the book/series you like the best, based on your experience with them on your other travels. Thus, if you like the Michelin or Eyewitness or Lonely Planet books, choose one for your U.S. travels. Secondly, get the most concise coverage possible – a state is better than a region; an area within a state (Colorado Rocky Mountains rather than just Colorado) is better than the state; and (if you’re visiting the cities) a city guide better than a state book.
...... Most importantly, go to a local bookstore when you arrive at your desired destination, and purchase local guidebooks that you’ll never see on Amazon.
...... As with most of these chapters, we go into much greater detail on guidebooks – including some recommendations about general guidebooks – in the printed version of How To Travel America.
