THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA

CARS

America is a country of cars. It’s a big place, and long-distance transportation (other than by air) is nearly non-existent. There are few places within direct reach of Amtrak (the national rail service) or any state or regional rail service. Cross-country or long-distance busses are less-than-wonderful experiences, and just as infrequent and scattered as are trains.
...... Plan on renting a car. Period.
...... Fly to your closest airline hub for your destination, and pick up a rental car. There really are no other options for traveling around and seeing the country. Sure, you can get by without a car in New York or Chicago (and you probably don’t want to drive there anyway). But that’s not seeing America.
...... Driving in the U.S. is easy. The roads are generally in excellent condition, drivers are no worse (and often much better) than many other places in the world, signage is usually good, and highways will take you just about everywhere you want to go.
...... Car rentals can be expensive, but there are tricks to get lower rates (see the Travel Within America section of this website; How To Travel America also has more details).
...... Cars are also culture in America. Fast-food drive-ins, Route 66, and gas-guzzling SUVs are all icons of America’s car culture.
