THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA
MONEY
The U.S. currency is the dollar. Its exchange rate is easily found before you travel to America. Most banks in smaller cities and towns can not exchange your local currency for dollars. Plan on using ATM machines, and coming to America with maybe US$100 to get you started. Banks are usually open Monday through Friday, from around 9 to 5. Most banks have a 24-hour ATM machine. And most supermarkets now have bank mini-branches located inside the stores.
...... ATMs are ubiquitous, and most accept cards from the larger networks Cirrus, Star, Plus. As everywhere in the world, the banks which own the ATM machines usually add a surcharge if they’re not from your bank; and none of them will be from your bank.
...... Credit cards are generally universally accepted, but do keep some cash handy for purchases at small stores in small towns, for purchases from individuals (at arts-and-crafts fairs, roadside fruit stands, etc.), and for that one time your credit card doesn’t go through. Branded debit cards (Visa, etc.) are generally accepted anywhere credit cards are. The most common credit cards are Visa and MasterCard, with American Express a close third. Anything else and you may not always find them accepted.
