THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA

STATE AND NATIONAL DIFFERENCES

America is officially the “United States of America.” There are 50 states, and the Union which is America is strongly built on a concept of “state’s rights.” This means, for visitors, that the speed limits in New York are probably different than in California. That the liquor laws of Utah are (obviously) different from neighboring Colorado.
...... Each state creates many laws on their own, yet there are similarities. The biggest thing for the visitor is to be aware that such differences exist, and learn the specifics for your chosen destinations.
...... Sales taxes on goods and services are one of the major – and frustrating – variations for visitors. The sweater you see in a shop for $100 may end up costing you $100 (in a state with no sales tax), or $110 (in a state with a 10 percent tax rate). And that $110 sweater may only be $105 in the county outside the city (as there are city, county, state, and other taxes which can be levied).
...... Lodging taxes and car-rental taxes are probably the worst, with some adding as much as 20 percent to the room or rental rate.
...... Finally, be aware of those varying speed limits. There is no national norm, so look for the posted speed limits in any state or city you visit.
