THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA
LUGGAGE
Every guidebook ever written says “travel light.” Which is great in theory, but difficult in practice. Our suggestion is to take whatever you’re comfortable dragging around the airport on your departure and arrival. Remember, you’re almost surely traveling in a rental car, so super-light and austere isn’t really necessary.
...... That said, you can probably get by with less than you imagine. Clothing, shoes, cosmetics, and just about anything you need is available, even in the smallest towns. Some items such as outdoor-sports gear and clothing are probably cheaper to buy in the U.S. than in your home country.
...... But back to luggage. Wheeled suitcases are the norm, and are just fine most of the time you probably won’t be dragging them along cobblestone streets. For day use, we suggest a shoulder bag probably what you’re used to using at home for a day out. Fanny packs are OK, but generally too small to be useful for purchases, cameras, and other items. Daypacks are also fine, as they carry more, but they are awkward to access and make you look like a teenager (which may be OK with you).
