THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA
THE BIG PICTURE WHAT TO SEE IN AMERICA
This may be our most opinionated chapter in How To Travel America. Everyone has their own traveling agenda, but in general, we have some recommendations.
...... 1) See the culture the current culture. Travel to the Indian reservations of the southwest and watch Navajo weavers or Pueblo potters. Learn woodcarving at the National Museum of Woodcarving in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Find out how maple syrup is made in New England. Sample the wines of California’s Napa Valley.
...... 2) See the landscapes rather than the cities. Hike the hills as well as touring the museums. Concentrate on smaller towns and interact with the locals. One of our “secret” tips in How To Travel America is that ski areas are great all-year vacation spots. They usually have both winter (skiing, snowboarding) and summer (hiking, mountain biking) activities. They’re generally in beautiful country, and they almost always have a great “local’s” small town associated with them.
...... 3) The national parks are great, and deserving of their fame. They are also over-hyped (there are just as many beautiful landscapes elsewhere, if you know where to look) and over-crowded. If you do go, avoid July and August.
...... 4) If you’re short on time, or just want to sample something and possibly do more of the same later, consider a guided activity of some sort. Everywhere across America guiding companies offer fly fishing trips, wine tours, photography workshops, whitewater rafting trips, and hundreds of other opportunities.
...... 5) Be active. Go sea kayaking around Washington’s San Juan Islands. Learn to surf in California. Hike a 14,000-foot peak in Colorado. Take a bike tour of New Hampshire. There is no better way to see a place than to do something in it.
