THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA

LODGING, RESERVATIONS

The internet has changed lodging forever. Gone are the days – in the U.S. and in the rest of the world, as well – when one could arrive at a destination and have one’s choice of several hotels, lodges, B&Bs, or guesthouses. Today, things fill up fast, and farther in advance then ever before. If at all possible, make lodging reservations well in advance, at least for your first day or two at each destination in the U.S.
...... Your choices are much the same as anywhere else in the world – hotels, pensions, B&Bs, guest houses, etc. – with one exception. The uniquely American icon is the “motel.” The word was coined as a shortening of the words “motor hotel,” and is often the only lodging option in many smaller communities. The rooms will usually be clean, and you can drive right up to your room’s door – that was their appeal from the beginning.
...... As anywhere, research your lodging carefully – some establishments are independently rated (AAA, Mobil, Michelin) but sometimes 3 stars (or diamonds or whatever) simply means that’s what the owner thinks the property should have.
...... In general, we’ve never really been disappointed with staying at B&Bs (bed and breakfast). The rooms are usually nice, the food great, and the proprietors friendly. Do be aware that B&Bs are the only places in America where you might not have an en-suite toilet – most do, but a few have shared bathrooms. Ask first. Nonetheless, they’re our favorite type of lodging, and we offer listings for B&Bs on this website.
