THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA
HOLIDAYS
Below is a quick calendar of the major U.S. holidays. Don’t be afraid to travel during those dates hotels are always open, while restaurants and shops are open on most holidays except Thanksgiving day, Christmas day, and New Year’s day. Americans travel on their holidays, so businesses are open to cater to them. (Although, many shops are closed on Sundays, and some restaurants are closed on Mondays. Museums may also be closed Sunday, Monday, other days of the week, and on some holidays.)
...... Flying on (or close to) a major holiday is another matter. Be aware that airfares are more expensive, airports are crowded, and delays are frequent around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. While there are other holidays not listed here (Easter, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Halloween, etc.) they should not have any impact on your travels. Special events may occur during holiday times, but many other events and festivals occur at all times of the year.
• New Year’s Day January 1
• Martin Luther King Day third Monday in January
• Presidents Day third Monday in February
• Memorial Day last Monday in May
• Fourth of July (Independence Day) July 4
• Labor Day first Monday in September
• Thanksgiving third Thursday in November
• Christmas Day December 25
• New Year’s Eve December 31
