THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TRAVELLING AMERICA

PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO

Everything (or so it seems) is going digital today. You can find memory cards for your digital camera at photo shops, some pharmacies, some supermarkets, and at “big box” stores like Wal-Mart (which we wish, as a visitor, you’d seriously avoid). Film, especially color print film, is still widely available at the same locations. Color slide or black-and-white film is hard to find anywhere other than a specialty photo store.
...... Take lots of pictures. You may never be back, and there’s a lot of landscape outside your rental car window. In How To Travel America we have a section with tips from professional photographers on how to take great travel photos.
...... The U.S. video standard is NTSC. Most of Europe, and various other countries, such as China, use PAL. Japan uses the NTSC system. France, Russia, and other countries use SECAM. If you visit from a country that doesn’t use NTSC, you will be able to charge your video camera, record tapes, and even purchase blank video tapes, but you will not be able to show your PAL/SECAM footage on U.S. televisions. Also remember that any videos or DVDs you purchase in the U.S. will most likely only work in the U.S., and will not operate in your PAL/SECAM equipment at home.
...... Otherwise, shooting video is as simple as it is in your country. We also have a section in How To Travel America on how to create your own quality film of your journey.
