BIKE TOURING VERMONT
.......For bicyclists, there are many dream touring destinations rural France, the California wine country, the Italian Alps (for the strong), and the back roads of Vermont. We’ve traveled to many of those places, and for us Vermont offers the ultimate bicycling vacation.
.......There are several well-respected and long-established bicycling touring companies offering trips in Vermont. In addition, the region lends itself to “self-catered,” on-your-own trips. There are bike rental shops, quiet roads, great dining options, and hundreds of B&Bs to rest your tired body.
.......An ideal trip might be one of the commercial inn-to-inn tours. The bike touring company provides maps, guides, bike rentals if necessary, sag wagon support, and luggage transfer between lodgings. It doesn’t get much better than riding a beautiful backcountry road, seeing very little vehicle traffic, stopping for lunch on a village green, and then relaxing in the hot tub of your B&B before sitting down to a home-cooked meal with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for dessert.

.......The prime season for cycling Vermont (as well as the rest of New England) is mid May through early October. Color season (generally late September into early October) is the most popular, and consequently the most expensive. The late May to early June period is typically the quietest, with the fresh greens of springtime, fewer tourists, and cheaper rates making it an excellent season also.
.......The biking in Vermont is most frequently concentrated in the central and northern parts of the state, but good roads and scenic delights abound in the entire state.
.......If you’re on you own and traveling a long distance, consider taking your own bike seat, pedals, shoes, and helmet (as well as clothing, of course) and renting a bike on arrival. That’s even a good idea for customers of the bike tour companies, for no matter how good their rental equipment is, it’s great to have your own “contact points” on the bike.
. ......Resources abound there are dozens of reputable bike tour companies (all with nice websites and catalogs); B&Bs litter the state; and there are several excellent guidebooks to Vermont’s destinations and environment. Burlington is the major air hub in Vermont, but being a relatively small city it doesn’t have as many air connections as larger hubs.
