SKIING COLORADO

.......Colorado is, along with Utah, the premier winter sports destination in the western U.S. More than 25 ski areas are scattered throughout Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Some of the names are known to every skier - Aspen, Vail, Telluride. Other resorts are considerably smaller - Wolf Creek, Sunlight, Monarch.

.......The season typically runs from late November through early April, although some resorts (Loveland) try to open in October, and others (A Basin) may stay open as late as June. The best bets for good snow and the fewest crowds are January and February, but spring (March to early April) offers warm days, corn snow, and famously blue Colorado skies.

.......Plan your trip through ski consolidators, or contact resorts directly for their deals on combinations of airfare, lodging, and skiing. Except during U.S. school spring breaks (usually sometime in March), and over holiday weekends (such as President’s Day), you should be able to book a ski vacation fairly easily at the last minute.

.......Our suggestions are to travel with your ski boots, but rent skis and poles at your destination.

.......If you’re coming for a winter ski or snowboard holiday, remember that attractions and other destinations near ski destinations can be snow free and less crowded in winter. The ancient Indian sites of the desert southwest are only a half day from resorts like Telluride or Durango. You can see Mesa Verde or Canyonlands (for example) without the crowds and during mild days (rather than during the heat of summer).
